High-voltage cable buyers in Virginia

Above 35 kV, a reel without documentation is nearly impossible to place. The review is a records exercise first and a material exercise second.

Heavy cable reels in an industrial yard beside switchyard structures.

High-voltage cable in the 69 kV and above range appears rarely and in small quantities: a cancelled substation project, a utility standards change, a surplus reel from a transmission or large industrial distribution job. We review these lots when the documentation exists to support them.

What has to be present

  • Factory test reports and the original reel tag.
  • Insulation type, thickness class, shield construction and jacket specification.
  • Conductor size and strand, plus the overall cable diameter.
  • Storage history, including reel orientation, UV exposure and water ingress.
  • Any post-installation or post-storage test data, such as partial discharge or VLF results.

An honest starting point

Much high-voltage surplus is only suitable for recovery rather than reuse, and that determination needs a qualified assessment. We would rather tell a seller that early than build an offer on optimism. If the reel has records and has been stored on dunnage with the ends sealed, that is a genuine candidate; if it has been sitting on the ground behind a building for six years, the expected outcome is different.

Handling first. High-voltage reels can exceed what any normal site can lift. Before a review can go far, we need to know the reel weight or diameter, the equipment available, and whether a transport permit would be required for the route.

Submitting a high-voltage lot

Send the reel tag, the print, the test reports and a set of photographs showing the reel, the ends and the storage position. Note the Virginia city or ZIP and the loading equipment on site. If some paperwork is missing, say which parts — the review can still proceed, but it will be scoped to what is documented.

Questions sellers ask

Questions about this material

Is high-voltage cable without test records reviewed?

It can be submitted, but the review is limited to what is documented and the likely outcome is recovery rather than reuse. Missing records are a material fact, not a detail to work around.

How is high-voltage cable transported?

Transport depends on reel mass and diameter, route restrictions and the equipment at both ends. Freight terms are agreed per transaction in writing before anything moves.

What voltage range is treated as high voltage here?

Above 35 kV, typically 69 kV and higher. Cable in the 5 kV to 35 kV range is reviewed under medium-voltage cable.

Describe the lot as it actually sits. Photos of the reel tag and jacket print do more than any description, and mixed or unidentified cable can still be submitted for review.
