Aluminum electrical wire buyers in Virginia

Aluminum feeder, service and underground cable runs in long lengths and heavy reels, and that is exactly why the details matter: alloy, insulation type, conductor count and footage decide whether a lot can be reused or only recovered.

We review surplus aluminum electrical wire and cable from Virginia job sites, distributors, plants and utility stores. The common thread is documentation: an aluminum reel that still carries its factory tag and hasn't been left standing in water is a straightforward review, while a weathered reel with no print takes longer and may not qualify.

Aluminum cable families we see most in Virginia

  • Building wire: aluminum THHN, THWN-2 and XHHW-2 singles for feeder and subfeed work.
  • Service entrance: aluminum SER and SEU assemblies, including 4/0 and 250 kcmil mobile home and residential feeder.
  • Underground: URD and USE-2 direct-burial cable, dual-rated constructions, triplex and quadruplex service drop.
  • Large feeder: 350, 500, 750 and 1,000 kcmil single-conductor cable on reels, including parallel sets bought together for one project.
  • Industrial: aluminum tray cable and multi-conductor power cable where the print identifies it.

Alloy and construction are not interchangeable

AA-8000 series alloy is the standard for modern building wire, and older 1350 or AA-1350 conductor is treated differently by the code and by a buyer. Insulation matters as much as metal: XHHW-2 and RHW-2/USE-2 carry different location ratings, and a reel printed for dry locations only is not the same asset as a dual-rated underground cable. Send the print rather than the memory of what it was bought for.

Storage damage is the usual problem

Aluminum cable stored outdoors for a season collects water inside the jacket at the cut end, and that end is where the review starts. Expect to show the cut face, the first few feet of jacket, and whether the reel has been standing in gravel or on dunnage. Sun-degraded jackets on USE-2 and URD are common and are noted rather than hidden.

Aluminum is not a copper substitute on paper. A lot described as "same as copper" without the jacket print tells us nothing about ampacity, insulation rating or alloy. One clear photograph of the print resolves it faster than a paragraph.

What to include with an aluminum lot

Conductor size in AWG or kcmil, number of conductors, insulation type, voltage rating, approximate footage per reel, reel count, and the Virginia city or ZIP where it sits. If the lot came from a cancelled service upgrade or a utility project, say so and note whether the reels are still banded and sealed.

Questions sellers ask

Questions about this material

Do you review aluminum wire with no jacket print?

Yes, but it is reviewed as unidentified material. A measured conductor size, a photograph of the cut end showing the strand pattern, and any reel tag help; acceptance is not promised for material whose construction cannot be established.

Is old 1350 alloy aluminum wire of interest?

It can be submitted for review, but modern AA-8000 alloy is what most reuse-oriented buyers want. The print and the date on the tag are the fastest way to tell which one you have.

What about aluminum service drop and triplex?

Utility-style triplex and quadruplex service drop is reviewed as a separate lot type. Send the conductor sizes, the neutral size if printed, and whether the reels are factory sealed or partly used.

Describe the lot as it actually sits. Photos of the reel tag and jacket print do more than any description, and mixed or unidentified cable can still be submitted for review.
