Wire we buy / Large MCM
Large MCM wire and feeder cable buyers in Virginia
Above 250 kcmil, everything about a lot is heavier: the reels, the rigging, the freight and the consequences of a wrong size on the tag. Precision pays here more than anywhere else.

Large conductor cable — 250, 300, 350, 400, 500, 600, 750 and 1,000 kcmil — is bought for services, switchgear, transformers, chillers and data centre distribution. Surplus exists because these jobs are designed with spare capacity and because change orders leave reels behind.
Common constructions
- Single-conductor copper or aluminum XHHW-2 and THHN in 250 through 1,000 kcmil.
- Parallel sets: multiple identical reels bought for one feeder, often still banded.
- Medium-voltage shielded feeder in the same size range, reviewed under medium voltage.
- Large SER and SEU assemblies for heavy service work.
- Bare copper and grounding conductor in large sizes.
Matched sets are the best lot
When a feeder is designed as four sets of 500 kcmil per phase, the reels were bought as a set and are usually identical in length. A matched set with the tags intact is straightforward to review and to reuse. A single orphaned 350 kcmil reel is still reviewed, but it is a smaller and more specific market.
Weight, rigging and freight are the real constraints
A full reel of 750 kcmil copper can weigh several thousand pounds. Before an offer makes sense, the review needs: approximate reel weight or diameter, whether a forklift on site can lift it, whether the truck can reach the reel, and whether the reel has a steel or wooden core. Photograph the reel where it sits, not just the wire.
| Detail | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Size | 250 to 1,000 kcmil, printed or tagged |
| Metal | Copper and aluminum are separate markets |
| Insulation | XHHW-2, THHN, MV shield class |
| Footage | Factory length or measured remainder |
| Reel mass | Determines loading and freight |
Send the reel tag, not an estimate
At this size, "about 500 MCM" is not enough — the difference between 350 and 500 kcmil is the difference between two markets. Photograph the print along the conductor and the tag on the reel flange, and note whether the reel is sealed or has been cut.

Questions sellers ask
Questions about this material
Do you buy single reels of 500 or 750 MCM?
Yes. Single large reels are reviewed on their own merits. Matched sets are easier to place, but a documented single reel with footage is a normal submission.
How much does a full 750 MCM reel weigh?
It depends on the construction and put-up, and copper reels are far heavier than aluminum. The review asks for the reel weight or diameter rather than assuming a figure, because loading arrangements depend on it.
Is large aluminum feeder as interesting as copper?
Both are reviewed. They are counted and valued separately because the conductor markets differ, and the insulation type matters as much as the metal.

Describe the lot as it actually sits. Photos of the reel tag and jacket print do more than any description, and mixed or unidentified cable can still be submitted for review.
