Surplus electrical wire buyers in Hampton Roads

Hampton Roads combines shipbuilding, port logistics and a very large military footprint. The wire surplus that results is heavy, industrial and often documented to a standard most private sites never reach.

Wooden cable reels loaded and strapped onto a flatbed trailer for transport
Cable reels loaded on a flatbed trailer, the usual way heavy Hampton Roads lots move.

Hampton Roads covers Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Newport News, Hampton, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Williamsburg, Poquoson and the counties around them. Ship repair and shipbuilding, port and intermodal operations, food processing and a dense military and municipal construction programme all generate cable surplus.

Where the lots come from

  • Shipyard and repair work in Newport News and Norfolk: welding cable, portable cord, control and instrumentation cable, and heavy power cable from refits.
  • Port and intermodal facilities: crane and yard electrification cable, tray cable and feeder.
  • Municipal and military construction: documented surplus released through a property process.
  • Oceanfront and resort commercial work in Virginia Beach: MC, THHN and low-voltage cable after seasonal fit-outs.

Salt air changes the condition question

Cable stored near the water in this region corrodes at terminations and at any exposed copper. That does not condemn a reel, but it does mean the review wants photographs of the ends and any exposed conductor. Indoor storage in a conditioned space is worth mentioning explicitly, because it is the exception here rather than the rule.

Tunnels, bridges and timing

Moving a heavy reel between the Peninsula and the Southside means the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, the Monitor-Merrimac or the James River Bridge, and the timing matters. Say which side of the water the material is on; it is a logistics fact that affects every quote.

Shipyard surplus is often staged in a yard, not a warehouse. Photograph the reels where they sit, including the dunnage and the ground conditions. A reel that has been standing in a gravel yard for two years is reviewed honestly, not optimistically.

Questions sellers ask

Questions about this material

Do you buy welding cable from shipyard work?

Yes, as part of a lot, with jacket condition stated. Worn or stiffened welding cable is reviewed as recoverable material rather than reusable cable.

Can material be collected from the Peninsula and the Southside together?

Each site is reviewed on its own access and timing. If a lot spans both sides of the water, describe each location separately.

Describe the lot as it actually sits. Photos of the reel tag and jacket print do more than any description, and mixed or unidentified cable can still be submitted for review.
