Selling utility surplus cable in Virginia

Utility stores are disciplined places. When cable is released as surplus it usually comes with records, and records are exactly what makes a utility lot reviewable.

Virginia's electric cooperatives, municipal systems and investor-owned utilities hold standards-driven cable inventories. When a standard changes or a project is cancelled, cable is released through a documented surplus process. That documentation is the difference between a straightforward review and a long conversation.

Cable that appears in utility surplus

  • URD and distribution cable, including concentric neutral and triplex arrangements.
  • Service drop and secondary cable in copper or aluminum.
  • Medium-voltage feeder for substation and distribution work.
  • Grounding conductor, bare copper and counterpoise wire.
  • Control and instrumentation cable from relay and SCADA work.

Records do the heavy lifting

A reel tag plus the release document answers the questions that would otherwise take a site visit: construction, voltage class, footage, age and storage history. Send both. If the release document references a specification number, include the specification; it tells the review exactly what the cable was built to.

Realistic outcomes

Some utility surplus is reusable; some is only suitable for recovery, particularly cable that has been stored outdoors for years or has been pulled and returned. The review will say which, based on the evidence. We do not promise acceptance of any lot, and we do not value cable on the assumption that it is new when the records say otherwise.

Yard access is part of the lot. Utility yards have gate procedures, escort requirements and vehicle limits. Note them with the submission rather than after an agreement.

Submitting

Reel count, construction, voltage class, footage, release documentation, yard location in Virginia and access conditions. Photographs of tags and one wide shot of the storage row are enough to begin.

Questions sellers ask

Questions about this material

Do you buy cable that has been in service and returned?

Returned and removed cable is reviewed as used material. Its history, storage and any test data determine whether it can serve again or is only recoverable.

Is a utility release document required?

It is not a legal requirement for every lot, but it is the strongest evidence of ownership and specification. Without it, the lot is reviewed on photographs and tags alone.

Can you work within a utility's vendor process?

Where a utility requires its own disposal or bidding process, that process takes precedence. We can supply details in the form that process requires.

Describe the lot as it actually sits. Photos of the reel tag and jacket print do more than any description, and mixed or unidentified cable can still be submitted for review.
