Selling data centre cable overstock in Virginia

Northern Virginia builds in phases, and every phase ends with pallets of feeder, ground and tray cable that were bought for a hall that changed shape.

Large wooden cable reels of grey jacketed wire stored in a high-bay warehouse
High-bay warehouse holding large feeder reels, typical of data centre project stock.

Loudoun and Prince William counties hold the densest concentration of data centre capacity in the world, with additional campuses around Richmond, Henrico and Virginia Beach. Fit-outs are fast, design changes are frequent, and the electrical contractor is left holding cable bought for the previous revision.

What data centre surplus looks like

  • Large feeder in copper or aluminum, often in matched parallel sets.
  • Grounding conductor and bare copper for grounding grids and busbar bonding.
  • Tray cable, MC and VFD cable for mechanical and pump work.
  • Communications and low-voltage cable in factory cartons.
  • Medium-voltage feeder where a campus distribution change occurred.

Why documentation is usually excellent

Data centre work is heavily documented: submittals, PO records, reel tags and receiving photos exist for almost everything. That documentation is the reason these lots review well. If you have the receiving record or the submittal that shows the construction, include it — it removes most of the questions.

What actually blocks a data centre lot

Not the wire. It is access: a completed hall has security, badging and freight elevator limits, and the surplus may be in a cage that a truck cannot reach without a scheduled escort. Tell us those constraints up front. A lot that is genuinely available is worth more of the review's time than one that might be.

Matched sets stay matched. If four reels were bought as one feeder set, keep them together in the submission and do not let one be cut for another job. A matched set travels as a set.

Submitting

Reel count, construction and size, footage, matched-set groupings, documentation available, site access conditions, and the Virginia city or ZIP. Photographs of tags plus one wide shot of the staging area are enough to start.

Questions sellers ask

Questions about this material

Can surplus be removed from an operating data centre?

Yes, with the site's own access process: badging, escort, freight routing and hours. State those constraints in the submission so logistics can be planned rather than discovered at pickup.

Do you buy communications and low-voltage cable?

Factory-packaged communications and low-voltage cable is reviewed as part of a data centre lot. Terminated patch assemblies and used cable are outside the core scope.

Is medium-voltage data centre cable reviewed here?

Medium-voltage feeder is reviewed under medium-voltage cable, with the same need for records and handling detail.

Describe the lot as it actually sits. Photos of the reel tag and jacket print do more than any description, and mixed or unidentified cable can still be submitted for review.

Up to 10 MB total per submission. Reel tags and the printed jacket legend are the two most useful photos you can take.
