Selling surplus wire from hospitals and campuses
Institutional surplus is the best-documented wire in Virginia and the slowest to be released. The review starts when the material finally clears the facilities committee.

Hospitals, universities, pharmaceutical facilities and research campuses run continuous construction and maintenance programmes, and each one ends with leftover cable. The material is usually well labelled because institutional work requires submittals and closeout documents.
Where the surplus sits
- Facilities maintenance stores holding HCF, MC and control cable for ongoing work.
- Capital project closeouts with unopened reels and partial pulls.
- Laboratory and research fit-outs where shielded and instrumentation cable was over-bought.
- Infrastructure upgrades — emergency power, chillers, switchgear — that left feeder reels.
- Decommissioned equipment whose cable was removed and stored rather than discarded.
Why the review moves slowly, and what helps
Institutional disposals usually need a surplus-property approval, which can take weeks. That is normal. What speeds up the technical side is having the closeout documents: submittals, receiving records, and a list of what is in the store. With those, the review can be largely complete before the approval lands.
- Closeout file Submittals and receiving records prove construction.
- Store list A facilities export is faster than counting reels.
- Segregation Keep HCF, control and feeder cable in separate groups.
- Access Loading docks, service elevators and hours.
Submitting
Facility type and city, store list or reel count, constructions and sizes, footage, documentation available, and access arrangements. For hospital work, note any infection-control or delivery-window restrictions that affect removal.
Questions sellers ask
Questions about this material
Do you buy cable from a research facility?
Yes, including shielded and instrumentation cable, when the lot is documented and released for sale. Sensitive or controlled material must clear the facility's own process first.
Is HCF hospital-grade cable reviewed separately?
Yes. The isolated grounding conductor changes who can use it, so it is counted and reviewed as its own construction.
Can material still on the books be submitted?
It can be described, but the sale cannot proceed until the facility releases it. The review can still be prepared in advance using the closeout documentation.

Describe the lot as it actually sits. Photos of the reel tag and jacket print do more than any description, and mixed or unidentified cable can still be submitted for review.
