Wire we buy / Reels and put-ups
Full and partial wire reel buyers in Virginia
Most surplus wire is not a clean pallet of sealed reels. It is eleven full reels, forty partials and a shelf of boxes — and the way you separate those three groups decides how quickly the lot can be reviewed.

We review wire in every put-up it actually arrives in: full wooden reels, part reels, plastic spools, cardboard spools, coils, boxed lengths and unopened cartons. The put-up does not decide whether a lot is interesting; the documentation and condition do.
How to group a mixed reel inventory
- Sealed factory reels. Tag intact, band or wrap intact, footage printed. List size, construction and footage per reel.
- Opened reels with a known remainder. The factory tag is still on the flange and most of the wire is visibly present. Note the original footage and your estimate.
- Opened reels with an unknown remainder. Measure, count wraps, or state that it is unknown. Unknown is an acceptable answer; an invented number is not.
- Loose coils, offcuts and boxes. Group by size and construction, count the pieces, give a weight if you can.
Reel condition and what it tells us
Broken flanges, missing lagging, rot in a wooden reel and a bent steel core all affect handling. Wire that has been crushed against a flange is a defect even if the jacket looks fine. Photograph the flange face — it is where the damage and the tag both live.
Storage method matters more than age
A 2011 reel stored indoors on racking is usually in better condition than a 2021 reel that sat outside in the rain. Reels stored on their side collect water in the core; reels stored upright on dunnage drain. Say how they are stored, and photograph the storage area as well as the reels.
Do not re-spool to make a lot look tidier. Re-spooling introduces kinks, breaks the factory put-up and removes the tag from the wire. Photograph what exists.
Send
Reel count, the three-group split above, size and construction per group, approximate total footage, city or ZIP, and loading. A wide photograph of the storage area plus close-ups of representative tags is the most efficient submission there is.

Questions sellers ask
Questions about this material
Are partial reels worth selling at all?
Yes, as part of a lot. Partial reels are the majority of real-world surplus. The review needs size, construction and an honest remaining-footage estimate rather than a tidy average.
Can wire be on plastic spools or in cartons?
Yes. Spools, boxed lengths and unopened cartons are reviewed on the same basis as wooden reels: label, construction, size, length and condition.
What if I cannot measure the remaining footage?
Say so and add photographs of the reel showing the wire level against the flange. Unknown footage is reviewed more conservatively, but it is not a reason to leave the lot out.

Describe the lot as it actually sits. Photos of the reel tag and jacket print do more than any description, and mixed or unidentified cable can still be submitted for review.
